Larry W. Walla, age 71, of Hatches Corner Road, Monroe Township, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at his home. Mr. Walla was born February 4, 1939 to Frank and Leona “Sue” (Rathbun) Walla. He graduated from Rowe High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. He was a self-employed farmer. He is survived by his loving wife Song Cha “Tammy” Walla; two sons, Robert (Sue) Walla of Brunswick and Troy Walla (friend, Barb) of Conneaut; grandchildren, Benjamin, Donovan and Abigail; sister, Bonnie (Norman) Taylor; and close friend, Glen Kobernik. Larry is preceded in death by his parents. Funeral service will be held, Monday, August 16, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut, with Pastor Tim Kraus of Church of Christ, officiating. Burial will follow at Kelloggsville Cemetery. Calling hours will be held, Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 2 to 5 at the funeral home. Should friends desire memorials in his name may be made to the Erie Regional Cancer Center or the Hospice of the Western Reserve. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

John A. Bromfield, age 93, of Center Rd., Monroe Township, died Monday, August 09, 2010 at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center He was born May 14, 1917 in Monroe Township to Charles and Frances (Adams) Bromfield. John graduated from Conneaut High School and operated the Bromfield family farm with his brother Wes. Mr. Bromfield was a 45-year member of Monroe United Methodist Church and the Monroe Grange. He was a former Monroe Township Trustee and helped in various capacities for the church, serving as treasurer, trustee and Sunday school teacher. John helped the church by serving on every committee and job when he was asked and even assisted in various construction projects including the handicap ramp and notably the lighted cross that adorns the alter was constructed from the siding of one of his barns. He enjoyed calling square dances and spending time with his family and being a mentor to them. He is survived by his daughter, Patty (Mike) Hynd of Geneva; sons, Al (Carol) Hess of Cincinnatti and William (Paula) Hess of Lawrenceville, GA; grandchildren, Michael, James and Carrie Hynd, Chip Hess, Taylor Hess and Alexander Hess; nieces and nephews Russell (Barb) Hall of Conneaut, Frances (Charles) Moss of Champion, Mary Ellen Moyer of Champion, Charles Gordon (Joann) of Pittsburg, Carolyn (Christy) Tenney of Geneva; great-nieces and great-nephews, Rick (Janice) Eldred of Monroe, Lonnie (Robi) Eldred of Arizona, Joyce (Terry) Newhart of Jefferson, Julie (Gary) Funk of Wisconsin, Myron (Rosmarie) Eldred of Monroe, Rod (Rachel) Eldred of Monroe and Joanne (Steve) Stover of Monroe; and his beloved dog “Snookum.” His preceded in death by his parents; fiancé Thelma Hess; son, Tom Hess; brother, Charles Wesley Bromfield; sisters, Flora Lewis and Eleanor Hall; nephews, Arthur and Richard Hall; and niece, Gladys Eldred. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the Thompson-Smith Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Conneaut with Rev. Lois Burke of Monroe United Methodist Church, officiating. Calling hour will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. until time of services at 11:00. Burial will follow at Kelloggsville Cemetery. Should friends desire memorials in his name may be given to the Monroe United Methodist Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
